This disease is caused by Legionella pneumophila bacteria. Legionnaire’s Disease acquired its name in 1978 when an outbreak of pneumonia-like symptoms occurred among people attending a convention of the American Legion in Philadelphia. An estimated 8,000 to 18,000 people get Legionnaires” Disease each year in the3 United States.

This organism is associated with water and is widespread in the environment including lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water and soils. It is also found in man-made systems such as cooling towers, drip pans, as well as, other warm water systems where the water is kept between 68 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the normal operation of a cooling tower, aerosols are formed which are carried into the environment through the tower exhaust. If Legionella is present in the tower water, breathing aerosols can result in infection. It is passed from person to person, and cannot be acquired by drinking Legionella contaminated water.
